DRQ 6 Assignment two urban models

(a) Differentiation of functional zones from the centre
Mann: Age of house decreases with distance from the centre
ELDC: Newer development can be found close to the centre
Residential differentiation
Mann: Divided into distinct sectors base on social economic status
ELDC: Also differentiated by SES but a ring of high class housing found all around the CBD
Commercial Core
Mann: Single CBD with a transition zone
ELDC: Secondary CBD found in the high class suburban area
High status housing
Mann: Located away from industrial sector
ELDC: Can locate next to industrial sector
Low status housing
Mann: Semi-permanent housing found all around urban periphery
ELDC: Low class housing found in the industrial sector

Differentiation of functional zones from the centre
Mann: Closely tied to by historical factors.
Urban growth started from the centre, some effort to rejuvenate the core.
Accessibility level high around the entire city
ELDC model
Development dictate by accessibility (i.e. the route to the port). City core undergoing changes.
Residential differentiation
Mann: Largely determined by compatibility of land use and social economic status.
ELDC model: Limited resources means only the most central locations have the amenities which attract high status housing development. Poor transport infrastructure means growth occurs only along certain directions
Commercial Core
Mann: Traditional urban landscape governed by traditional approach to urban planning.
ELDC model: More haphazard development, the secondary core reflects strong dualism in the economy.
High status housing
Mann: Influenced by accessibility.
ELDC model: Influence by the prevailing wind
Low status housing (council housing)
Mann: Lower class located next to industrial area so as to be near workplace.
ELDC model: Spontaneous and semi-permanent housing result of recent wave of rural migrants and the urban poor.
